Does your horse ‘nap’ to go home at the same point on every ride? Does the horse you leave behind fling themselves against the fence whinnying wildly? Does your horse just stop on a ride for seemingly, no good reason? These are all signs of separation anxiety.

How Each Horse Separation Anxiety Session Works:

Horses are herd animals. They are hard wired to look out for each other to make sure everyone in the herd is protected.

When we take this away, it must feel a little like running out onto the football pitch to meet the opposition and finding out the rest of your teammates have gone home. How are you going to do all those jobs by yourself? It’s overwhelming, it’s not safe.

So all horses experience separation anxiety, but the level to which this impacts on their behaviour depends on how safe your horse feels when they are without other equines.

How Shelley will work.

Shelley works with mindfulness to improve the horse, human connection so your horse develops Trust in you and confidence in themselves. This combination is the ticket to feeling safe.

The one to one sessions will be tailor made to work at the pace of your horse/horses in their own environment. Shelley can work with your horse on their own or with a companion horse or a whole herd. Through the sessions your horse will learn to self regulate previously heightened emotions and place their trust in you to take responsibility for their safety.

How we helped Hogan overcome his devastating separation anxiety

Below is a link to a film that follows Hogan from Havoc to Harmony as described by his human. He struggled massively with separation anxiety and his total panic caused many issues, often dangerous for his human and the whole herd. By working though the Trust Technique and allowing Hogan to drop into a healing state he was able to deal with old traumas of separation and relax into becoming a wonderful gentle leader of his herd.

What To Expect On The Day:

The Consultation is in 2 sessions approx one week apart.  Each session lasts approximately an hour and a half.

In the first session, Shelley will:

  • Assess the environment to check that it is safe and conducive for the successful use of the Trust Technique® and if it is;
  • Demonstrate The Trust Technique® with your animal.
  • Discuss the impact the technique has had on your animal.
  • Teach you how to use the technique.
  • Observe you conducting the Trust Technique® with your animal,  providing you with feedback and support.
  • Leave you with some exercises to practice before the next session.

The follow up visit will be approximately one week later and is included in the price.

During this session, Shelley will:

  • Answer any questions & discuss any changes in behaviour or wellbeing of your animal.
  • Work with your animal.
  • Review your use of the Technique so you feel confident using this method..

By now you will be recognising the benefits of this way of teaching your animal, you will have learned how to be there for them, as they begin to self regulate their behaviours in a positive & cooperative way.  You will be starting to fully enjoy your time together, rather than trying to control unwanted & stressful behaviours.

If more input is required, Shelley will then recommend an individual programme of one to one sessions, tailor made to suit you and your animal.

These sessions may take place either at their home or out and about on dog walks or rides etc. wherever most needed.
